The Body is a Vehicle for Spirit

It is my belief that the body is the vehicle for our spirit. Some of you may think, what does that even mean? What is our spirit?

Spirit can be defined as indestructible energy, awareness or life force. The body encapsulates this energy.

This idea became evident to me during a time in my life that I began to uncover childhood traumas and was seeking out professionals beyond mainstream therapy and medicine. I had an experience one day when I felt fully my legs!! My feet! It sounds funny, but I actually had the experience of my legs holding my body upright as a sturdy foundation. My legs felt alive, strong and like they had “energy” running through them. Have you ever had an experience like this before? Maybe when you were working out and felt a muscle strengthening that you had never noticed before or got a massage and the therapist touched a part of your body that rarely gets attention, let alone feels good and has a palpable sense of “being there.”

When you plug a lamp into an outlet energy runs through the cord and lights the bulb. Like a lamp, energy runs through our body and “lights us up.”

Have you ever met someone that just radiates and shines, and looks full of life?

Sometimes, I’ve found, we have blockages that prevent our energy to run seamlessly through our bodies, prevents us from fully “shining.” This can happen from trauma, depression, anxiety, lack of use of that part of the body, etc. Over time, you can become de-sensitized to these blockages and they become part of your normal functioning, until you have an experience like the ones I described above and realize this does not have to be the norm.

I believe that this is part of being human and the spiritual experience of this life. When we are conceived, our spirit is drawn from the infinite ocean of existence and squeezed into a tiny human form that feels, and feels deeply.

For the first nine or so months, we are in the womb, which some people believe may be very similar to that infinite ocean you are first pulled from. When we are born, we are pushed through the birthing canal, squeezed until we can hardly take it and pop out fully experiencing our body in this human world. It can be a very painful process, as well as joyful. Part of being human is feeling pain…and joy and everything in between. When we start to shut off parts of the body, not infiltrating them with our energy, leaving them blocked off, we aren’t fully filling our vehicle with spirit. We are blocked from the full experience of pain and pleasure.

There’s something to be said about a human that steps into the fullness of pain, tears and sweat and smiles throughout because they realize the beauty of their human experience. They realize what a gift it is to feel the joy of a relationship only to feel the pain of that loved one’s death. Pain and joy are two sides of the human coin. Inhabiting your vehicle allows you to navigate these experiences.
